Sunday night’s 2025 Golden Globes was yet another disappointing night for Oscar hopeful Anora.

Though the Palme d’Or-winning film from Sean Baker went into the evening with five nominations, tied with The Substance, which won best actress in a musical or comedy for star Demi Moore, Anora went home empty-handed.

Other films with multiple Golden Globe nominations that were shut out Sunday night include four-time nominee The Wild Robot, which had been expected by some pundits to win the best animated feature category; three-time nominee A Complete Unknown, though star Timothée Chalamet got some love during host Nikki Glaser’s monologue; and double nominees All We Imagine as Light, The Apprentice, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II, Inside Out 2 and The Last Showgirl.

Meanwhile, other top nominees fared only slightly better, winning just one award apiece, including six-time nominee Conclave, which went into the awards with the third-most nominations after top nominees (and winners) Emilia Pérez and The Brutalist, but won only for best screenplay, and four-time nominee Challengers, which won only for best score.

But perhaps there was no bigger gap between box-office performance and Golden Globes success than Wicked, which has grossed more than $650 million worldwide and flew into the Globes with four nominations, winning only one award for best cinematic and box-office achievement. Glaser said “everyone loved Wicked” in her monologue, but Globes voters may not have loved it as much as they cared for other projects.

On the TV side, The Bear similarly underperformed. The hit series from Disney’s FX went into the night with the most TV nominations, five, but won only one award, for actor in a comedy series, which went to an absent Jeremy Allen White. Ayo Edebiri was unable to repeat her win from last year, with the show itself losing to Hacks for the top prize of best comedy series.

In terms of surprises, I’m Still Here star Fernanda Torres beat out a star-studded group of nominees to win best drama actress over Babygirl’s Nicole Kidman, Maria’s Angelina Jolie and Lee‘s Kate Winslet, a Globes fave up for two awards Sunday night.

And going up against the acclaimed Inside Out 2 and The Wild Robot, Flow was an unexpected champ in the animated film field.

In the TV categories, Shogun actor Tadanobu Asano was also a surprise winner, beating out Monsters‘ Javier Bardem, Shrinking‘s Harrison Ford and The Bear‘s Ebon Moss-Bachrach, among others.

Golden Globes producer Dick Clark Productions is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge that also owns The Hollywood Reporter.
