Conversations about a Shadow of the Colossus movie have been around since the late 2000s. However, with such little movement on the project over the years, many fans assumed that the movie was effectively caught in development limbo. However, filmmaker Andrés “Andy” Muschietti, who has been attached to the project as director since 2014, gave positive updates about it in a recent interview.

Andy Muschietti’s Shadow of the Colossus movie was never abandoned

Although reports from 2014 stated that Andy Muschietti, who would go on to direct the highly successful It movies, would direct the film adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus for Sony Pictures, there have been few updates on the project since then. However, Muschietti recently disclosed in an interview with Radio TU that the film is still in development.

During the interview, Muschietti stressed that while he was not much of a gamer, he considers Shadow of the Colossus to be a “masterpiece” and mentioned that he has played it several times. He also stated that there may be a better opportunity to get the film made now.

Muschietti denied that the movie was an abandoned project and revealed that there was a script he liked before hinting at the reasons for the delay. Whilst not citing a specific reason for the holdup on going into production, the director mentioned that studio interest in a particular intellectual property and its current popularity are the major factors at play.

Sony Computer Entertainment released the action-adventure game Shadow of the Colossus on PlayStation 2 in 2005. The story follows a character named Wander as he searches through desolate and forbidden ruins for powers to bring back someone close to him. Widely regarded as one of the best and most influential video games of all time, Shadow of the Colossus garnered critical acclaim, won numerous awards, and was commercially successful.

Muschietti elaborated on his point by calling Shadow of the Colossus a “cult game” and saying that studios make decisions on how much budget to allocate to projects such as these based on their own numbers. He mentioned that studios can give out “200, 150, or 100 million dollars,” and that he wanted to make his version of the film for $200 million.
