Tyler Perry Calls Out Insurance Companies For Canceling Policies Ahead Of Fires

On Sunday, Jan. 12, Tyler Perry shared a lengthy message on Instagram after witnessing a woman using a garden hose to protect her 90-year-old parents’ home due to their canceled insurance. The moment pushed the filmmaker to question insurance companies for taking people’s money but ditching them when they need coverage the most.

“Does anyone else find it appalling that insurance companies can take billions of dollars out of communities for years and then, all of a sudden, be allowed to cancel millions of policies for the very people they became rich on? People who have paid premiums all of their lives are left with nothing because of pure greed,” Perry wrote.

Additionally, Perry shared that he’s keeping everyone affected by the fires in his prayers. He also revealed he’s working on finding ways to offer support.

Social Media Weighs In

Social media users went OFF in The Shade Room comment section after Tyler Perry spoke out. Many praised him for addressing the issue, while others expressed outrage over how insurance companies are handling the wildfire crisis in Los Angeles.

Instagram user @eyes_onthesky1 wrote, “It should be illegal to cancel insurance policies during a disaster.”

Instagram user @theyycallmetee wrote, “I never understood paying an insurance company for coverage that they can deny or cancel. It’s like what am I paying you for?”

While Instagram user @tylermnewkirk wrote, “We need more leaders inspiring positivity through their platforms. Happy he spoke up.”

Then Instagram user @countrygaldee wrote, “They did it ahead of time too. Makes you wonder if they KNEW something was coming …”

Another Instagram user @scrapvip2 wrote, “Tyler definitely a real 1 he don’t be scared to speak up & he definitely do something dude honorable.”

Instagram user @jsky_clothing wrote, “Health insurance, car insurance, property insurance. All a fraud. We need to demolish that.”

While another Instagram user @officialtonipayne wrote, “This is why a lot of people empathized with Luigi. Until you have been burned by insurance companies, you won’t know the feeling.”

Finally, Instagram user @nigerian_papi_ wrote, “These companies just care about money. They take from people for years then don’t help them when they need help.”

More Info On Canceled Policies

According to PageSix, the Los Angeles Times revealed that State Farm General Insurance announced in March 2024 plans to drop 30,000 home and condo policies upon expiration. Among them, 1,600 policies covered properties in Pacific Palisades, a Los Angeles area hit hard by fires that left many residents without homes or belongings.

The LA Times also reported that Allstate paused new policies, while Tokio Marine America Insurance Co. and Trans Pacific Insurance Co. pulled out of California altogether. Meanwhile, Mercury Insurance stepped up to welcome former customers of these companies.
