The planned Street Fighter movie is sliding into limbo, while Phoebe Dynevor‘s shark thriller is set to make a splash a bit later than planned.

Sony Pictures has removed Legendary’s Street Fighter film off of its theatrical release calendar after having previously scheduled it for March 20, 2026. Based on the popular video game franchise, the project is co-developed and produced with Capcom and had not yet announced its cast.

The Hollywood Reporter reported last month that Kitao Sakurai, who directed Netflix’s Eric André-led comedy feature Bad Trip from 2021, was set to direct the video game adaptation. Directors Danny and Michael Philippou (Talk to Me) had been attached to a previous iteration of the project. Sony and Legendary’s distribution pact ended last year.

Additionally, Tommy Wirkola‘s shark feature that stars Dynevor is now titled Shiver after having previously gone by Beneath the Storm. The Sony film is now set to hit theaters July 3, 2026, for a splashy summer release after having initially been set for Aug. 1, 2025.

Whitney Peak and Djimon Hounsou co-star in Shiver, with Adam McKay and Kevin Messick serving as producers. The film is set to compete with Universal’s Minions 3, which has also been scheduled to hit theaters over the Fourth of July weekend in 2026.

The Street Fighter franchise kicked off with the arcade fighting game that debuted in 1987, followed by the wildly popular Street Fighter II in 1991. A feature adaptation of the same name hit theaters in 1994 and starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Raúl Juliá as M. Bison, and Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li. In 2009, 20th Century Fox released Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

Hollywood has seen the value in video game adaptations following the recent successes of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie hits theaters next month.
