‘Looks Like A Student Film’

Actor Alec Baldwin accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of “Rust” in October 2021, but that didn’t prevent the movie from being completed.

Many called out the poor quality visuals, while others took the “30 Rock” actor to task for his role in the shooting.

A synopsis left underneath the video reads:

“A 13 year-old boy, left to fend for himself and his younger brother following the death of their parents in 1880’s Wyoming, is taken on a harrowing journey to old Mexico by his long estranged grandfather after he’s sentenced to hang for the accidental killing of a local rancher, with a US Marshall and a vicious Bounty Hunter in pursuit.”

Many in the comments found it “interesting” that the film itself began with an accidental death, with one user writing, “Interesting that according to the plot outline, the film itself starts with an accidental death.”

Although there were a few comments of “RIP Halyna Hutchins,” many held Baldwin responsible for her death in the comments.

“Guns don’t kill people, Alec Baldwin kills people,” read a few comments.

“The film was shot with real shooting scenes,” another user wrote.

“Warning! Real bullets were used for movie scenes. No joke,” another netizen added.

“Meh, feels like it’s gonna miss the mark. A misfiring, of sorts,” another user joked.

Other viewers were surprised to see the trailer released with such low quality visuals. “A camera operator died making this and all you can do is upload a 720p version of her work?” one user asked.

“Looks like a high school student film,” another viewer wrote.

“Looks like a student film. Cliché and old,” another agreed.

Interestingly enough, there were some positive comments on the video. “Releasing the film is a way to honor Hutchins. The film looks solid,” one user wrote.

“100% – Hutchins’ husband was instrumental in finishing the movie in her memory. Very sweet,” another netizen agreed.

“Ignore the angry Conservatives because their Orange God was made fun of on SNL. The film looks beautifully photographed,” another user chimed in.

“Exactly. Looks like a great movie and a great chance to honor her at the end,” another viewer added.

Although one user said it looked like an “awkward, uncomfortable watch,” another viewer actually gave the film some serious consideration.

“Alright, all jokes and meanness aside, I am going to make a serious comment here: The premise, the setting, the story actually seems to be up my alley for the type of movie that would appeal to me,” one viewer wrote. “This should be something I would look forward to watching, but I’ll never watch it, or anything with Alec Baldwin.”

“I won’t pay to see this, I’ll pass it up when it is free on streaming, if Amazon accidentally sent me a DVD and told me I could keep it, I would throw it in the trash with the cellophane intact,” they continued. “Alec is at the top of a growing list of actors whose work I will boycott, forever.”

Although there were a few calls for the “Beetlejuice” actor to face jail time for his role in Halyna Hutchins’ death, the trial has already come and gone. Baldwin was on trial in July 2024, facing a single charge of involuntary manslaughter that would have landed him a maximum of 18 months behind bars if convicted.

However, on the third day of the trial, the judge dismissed the charges against him with prejudice after she concluded that the prosecution had committed a Brady violation by withholding important evidence from the defense. In this case, it was bullets that were turned over to the police following the trial of armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. These bullets were filed under a different case number and were never disclosed to Baldwin’s legal team until a witness admitted to their existence during their testimony.

Although Baldwin will no longer face criminal charges for the death of Halyna Hutchins, the armorer was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and is currently serving her 18-month sentence.
