On this week’s lifestyles of the rich and richer, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) heads south with Seema (Sarita Choudhury) for lunch with Aiden (John Corbin), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) finds her wild side, Harry (Evan Goldenblatt) discovers why button fly pants are a torture device, Miranda (Cynthia Dixon) continues to flirt with Joy (Dolly Wells), Anthony (Mario Cantone) calls in the big guns to save his Hot Fella’s store, and everyone seems to be hiding their true motives.
Let’s start at the beginning.
Carrie shares with her agent, Amanda (Ashlie Atkinson), that she is working on a novel that no one will want to read, and Amanda is hoping it’s fantasy-related. Sex and the Cauldron—that’s the book I might read. Amanda also has speaking engagements for Carrie: Google, SXSW, and a memoirist panel in Williamsburg, Virginia, and, just like that, Carrie is making plans to visit Aiden.
Anthony’s new store seems like a bust with only our ladies as customers (hey, way to get the group together so they can comment on each other’s lives). Miranda is snarky about Carrie’s plan to visit Aiden in Virginia. I wish she was a little self-deprecating about moving across the country to be with Che, but it seems like we’re pretending that didn’t happen.
Kathy (in Carrie’s phone as Aiden’s wife) calls Carrie to ask her to secure some Adderall for Wyatt. Charlotte takes control of the situation, scores the drugs, and looks like a total badass in the process. The whole exchange is odd. Not the Adderall shortage, but why would Kathy ask Carrie? Why isn’t Aiden asking Carrie? Red flag…
For the first time, I’m mad at Lisa Todd Wexler. Her long-time editor, Grace (Quincy Tyler Bernstine), is offered a job with film director Steve McQueen, and she wants Lisa to be happy for her. But all Lisa can see is that Grace is abandoning the project. Lisa sulks and pouts until Herbert (Chris Jackson) reminds her that Grace has waited through Lisa’s pregnancies to finish this project.

Charlotte has a wicked case of FOMO and is persuaded by her workmates to join them for their after, after, after parties and Harry (Evan Handler) wants to join her. Love that Harry wants to join Charlotte for this journey.
In another attempt to make the other characters relevant, Carrie takes Harry shopping to make him presentable for Charlotte’s night out. Harry and Carrie go shopping! Harry pours himself into trendy button-fly jeans, and you just know they’ll be a callback.
Giuseppe (Sebastiano Pigazzi) doesn’t want to wear the Hot Fella’s uniform; he’s done his time, but for love, he puts on the uniform and, like the Pied Piper, leads a group into the bakery.
Seema is devastated that her long-term plan of buying out her business partner has been upended by Elliot’s (John Glover) announcement that he’s retiring. He’s 90! Elliot is selling his shares to Ryan Serhant (an actual real estate mogul and star of Million Dollar Listing), and by the look on Seema’s face, we are meant to hate him. This prompts Seema to escape with Carrie to Virginia.
It’s a nice bit of symmetry that Miranda will watch Shoe while Carrie’s out of town. I couldn’t help but wonder, what happened to Fatty? As Carrie is prepping Shoe’s cat condo, she and Miranda actually have a real moment. Carrie shares her plan to give Aiden a key to the apartment, and Miranda shares that she is going to ask Joy for some on-air tips. They both recognize that they are playing games, but Carrie tells Miranda this is hard for her and that it’s nice to see a real moment between them.

On the road and searching for real fried chicken, Carrie and Seema take on Virginia. Seema is trying to think about her next professional step, and Carrie is trying to be breezy. Denied chicken at a fancy restaurant, Seema brings a bucket of KFC to Carrie’s hotel room. Call back to the original series where Aiden tells Carrie that KFC in bed is his ideal night in. They both give each other some good advice, “if you don’t ask, you don’t get.”
Charlotte is holding court at the after-party and is a hit with her co-workers and a prospective client. It’s nice to see her taking charge, and her dancing drunk is reminiscent of the episode Where’s There’s Smoke, where Charlotte lip-synched to Doctor’s Orders. Harry is unable to get his jeans off in time and ends up peeing his pans, but encourages Charlotte to stay out with her colleagues.
It’s about this time in the episode where I’m no longer hate watching. I’m mourning for what this show could have been; an honest look at what it means to be a woman after 50 who doesn’t want to be passed over or assigned an archetype like put-upon mom, or sad spinster. They can be strong, sexy, determined, and self-aware.
Next week brings Carrie on the farm and, I’m sure, some drama with Kathy and Aiden.
Are the callbacks delightfully nostalgic or forced? Is the show getting better, or am I lowering my expectations?
