James Gunn’s Superman is currently flying in theaters, and while it’s doing “good enough” at the box office to give DC Studios a sigh of relief, don’t expect a sequel announcement anytime soon.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. and DC Studios are turning their attention elsewhere, specifically, to a new Wonder Woman movie.

“Although Warner Bros. has sequel options on Corenswet and Brosnahan, a sequel announcement does not appear to be imminent. Instead, sources say the studio is fast-tracking a Wonder Woman movie. And the studio is thrilled with Matt Reeves’ just-submitted screenplay draft for the sequel to The Batman.”

That means the iconic Amazonian warrior is stepping into the DCU spotlight. We first heard reports about a new Wonder Woman film last month when it was confirmed by Gunn, and while the writer’s identity is still under wraps, the project appears to be moving quickly behind the scenes.

One thing seems certain about the film, Gal Gadot won’t be returning. Before the DCU reboot, Patty Jenkins was set to direct a third Wonder Woman film. That project was scrapped after Gunn and Peter Safran took over, and according to reports, Jenkins walked away after “receiving notes on the treatment she submitted to the studio.”

As for who could wield the Lasso of Truth next, fans have thrown names into the ring, including Scream and Abigail star Melissa Barrera. She recently reacted to the idea in an interview with A Shot Magazine, saying:

“I think it’s nice because of what the character represents. I think whoever gets the role, I just hope that they can embody the essence of the character because I think that those movies, whether they’re Marvel or DC, their reach is so big.

“And because those artists that get those roles will inevitably get a built-in fanbase and have the eyes and the ears of so many people, I think that it would be nice if they did something actually positive with the influence that they have to at least be a good example of the kind of human being that you wanna be in the world, instead of just using it for self-serving purposes.”

As of right now, though, it’s still early in development and while I’m sure DC Studios has a wish list of names, I doubt they’ve reached out to any of them yet.

As for Superman, Gunn’s film has pulled in $220 million worldwide so far. For now, DC Studios is focused on building its “Gods and Monsters” slate, and Wonder Woman will play a big role in that. Who would you like to see play the character?
