A VFX artist who worked on James Gunn’s Superman has pulled back the curtain on a bizarre deleted moment that almost made the final cut. The scene, described by artist Matthew Eberle in a recent social media post, involved Krypto the Superdog and… a gruesome trail of dead abominable snowmen.

Eberle explained: “Originally… when Krypto is dragging Superman, they pass by several dead abominable snowmen… Superman says ‘Krypto, you have to stop killing abominable snowmen’… Hit the cutting room floor. I was there.”

The update also explains the Yeti-themed merchandise tied to the film’s marketing, including a “Fortress of Solitude Battle Set” that had fans scratching their heads when the creatures never appeared in the theatrical release.

According to Eberle, the deleted moment would have taken place immediately after Superman’s brutal defeat by the Hammer of Boravia in the opening sequence, which was a scene that sets the tone for the entire film. While the concept of Krypto casually mowing down Yetis sounds like something ripped from Gunn’s trademark dark humor, it also risked breaking the tension of a critical introduction.

The opening of Superman is designed to establish the hero’s vulnerability and the stakes of the new DC Universe. Dropping in a joke like that, especially one so grim, might have undercut that dramatic weight. At the same time, they stuck with the gag of Krypto jumping on Superman over and over again.

I think it would’ve been fun to see a trail of dead abominable snowmen! What do you think?
