Happy August, HBO Max subscribers!
Whether you’re a true crime junkie, a nature doc fan, or you’re just itching for the next installment in James Gunn’s DC Universe, HBO Max has some great new programming on the docket this month.
Check out Watch With Us’ recommendations for three must-watch shows that you should make sure to check out this month.
This August, you simply can’t miss the return of Peacemaker or these two new docuseries on HBO Max.
‘Animals on Drugs’ Season 1 (Now Streaming)
If you liked the movie Cocaine Bear, you have to watch this show — it’s basically that movie in real life. The three-episode docuseries, which premiered at the end of July, follows conservationist Forrest Galante as he tracks down animals that have been exposed to human substances to safely rehabilitate them.
Between “Cocaine Hippos,” “Drunk Bears” and “Meth Gators,” Galante helps these animals get unhooked from the substances that have flooded their environments. Watching animals on drugs is both kinda funny and kinda tragic — after all, they didn’t ask for any of this! But Galante and his team care deeply about their charges, and it’s strangely inspiring to watch them working to make a difference.
‘The Yogurt Shop Murders’ Season 1 (Now Streaming)
For all the brilliant solves in true crime, there are many more mysteries that never get answers. The Yogurt Shop Murders takes an in-depth look at one of those cold cases. In 1991, four teenage girls were murdered in a North Austin yogurt shop — a crime that both shook the city and remains one of the most famous unsolved cases to date.
But this five-episode series isn’t focused on solving the mystery itself. Instead, it examines the lasting impact on the families, the investigators and the Austin community. With never-before-seen footage and intimate present-day interviews, The Yogurt Shop Murders is a portrait of how people live with trauma in the absence of closure.
‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 (August 21)
After his cameo in Superman, John Cena is back as Chris Smith — aka Peacemaker — the violent but well-meaning vigilante who killed Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman) in The Suicide Squad. The first season saw him fighting an alien invasion with a group of misfit government agents and going through some surprisingly poignant emotional growth in the process.
This upcoming season is a direct follow-up to Superman and sees the return of season 1 faves Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt and Steve Agee as John Economos. Violence and laughs will ensue.
