As fans continue to wait for details regarding The Authority movie’s status in the DCU, James Gunn has shared yet another disappointing update about the ensemble project, as well as the much-awaited introduction of DC hero Static Shock in his revamped cinematic universe. In a recent interview, the DC Studios co-CEO shed light on why he’s facing troubles in integrating the two superhero entities into Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters of the DCU.
James Gunn on why The Authority and Static Shock are so challenging
While speaking with The New Blerd Order during his appearance at the red carpet premiere of Peacemaker Season 2, James Gunn divulged that the big-screen debut of Static Shock has been delayed for so long due to his unorthodox stature in the traditional version of the DC universe. He then likened the African-American character’s position to that of The Authority, citing similar problems in launching the superhero team in the DCU.
The Guardians of the Galaxy director said, “It’s all about integrating him with the DC Universe because he’s not a character that’s traditionally part of the DC Universe.” James Gunn then added, “It’s kind of like ‘The Authority.’ So, like, ‘The Authority’s been a little bit of a challenge simply because integrating [them] with the DCU has been a difficult thing to do, and the same thing is true of the Static Shock. Hopefully, we’ll figure out a way to do that.”
Despite announcing the film around two years ago, Gunn has failed to provide an encouraging update regarding The Authority’s status ever since. Most recently, during a July interaction, the acclaimed filmmaker simply scoffed when asked whether development on the project wasn’t “going so well.”
This reaction aligns with what Gunn said about The Authority in a February interview, where he revealed that the script for the film “had a harder time coming along.” As such, it remains unclear if the project will ever see the light of day.
