Mark Ruffalo, longtime star of Marvel’s Avengers franchise, has revealed which alternate role he would choose in the MCU. In a recent interview, he also reflected on his ongoing interest in exploring a Hulk vs. Wolverine storyline rooted in classic Marvel Comics.

Mark Ruffalo picks Wolverine as his alternate MCU role

Mark Ruffalo, best known in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, revealed that his alternate choice of role would have been Wolverine.

In a rapid-fire segment during his appearance on We’re Not Kidding with Mehdi Hasan, Ruffalo named Wolverine when asked which other Marvel character he would like to portray. He explained, “When I was a kid, that was my guy. It was Hulk and him,” acknowledging his long-standing admiration for the character.

This is not the first time Ruffalo has connected himself with Wolverine. At Tokyo Comic-Con in 2019, he shared that he pitched the idea of a Hulk vs. Wolverine project to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. He recalled Feige asking him if he had any new story ideas for Hulk, and Ruffalo responded by suggesting the clash between the two characters. He added, “‘Hulk vs. Wolverine.’ I’d like to see that. ‘Hulk vs. Wolverine’” (via ComicBook.com).

The proposed concept has roots in comic book history. Wolverine’s first Marvel Comics appearance in 1974 was as an opponent of the Hulk. Fans have long speculated about an adaptation of that rivalry for the screen. This interest grew after Disney acquired Fox’s Marvel characters, which made the X-Men available to join the MCU.

However, despite Ruffalo’s enthusiasm, the rights to Hulk remain tied to Universal Pictures. This complicates the possibility of a solo film. Marvel Studios has instead used Hulk primarily in ensemble movies, such as The Avengers films and Thor: Ragnarok. Ruffalo is confirmed to return as Hulk in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, marking the character’s next big-screen appearance. Industry timelines further suggest that X-Men and Wolverine projects are still in early development stages at Marvel.
