Nintendo has already released one big movie and has two more in the works, but according to a recent presentation today, they don’t have any plans on slowing down after those.
What are Nintendo’s future films for video game movies?
During a presentation to investors today (via IGN), Nintendo revealed that it was continuing to invest in movies based on some of their most iconic games. The company said that it was “building a framework for a consistent release cadence” of movies, and while they didn’t unveil new movies, the company does seem to have more plans to continue making movies.
Currently, Nintendo has only released one movie, its breakout film The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. Next year, a sequel to the movie, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is set to release on April 3, 2026. A movie based on The Legend of Zelda is also in the works, with a release date window of 2027 set for the movie.
“We are continuing to prepare for the ongoing release of movies in the future,” Nintendo said of its future plans.
Up next for Nintendo, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be a sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That film was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, from a screenplay written by Matthew Fogel. That film featured a star-studded cast, which included Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, who are all set to return for the sequel.
Like its name suggests, Super Mario Galaxy sees Mario traveling across the stars, as he tries once again to save Princess Peach and, this time, the universe, from Bowser. While it’s unclear if the movie will follow the exact story of the game, the game saw Mario traveling from planet to planet, all with different locations, characters, and terrains.
