Does James Gunn finally have the perfect Batman? Smallville star Tom Welling reveals that he wants to return to the DC Universe, just not in the role fans might expect.
To many, James Gunn and Peter Safran are ushering in the first truly connection live-action DC Universe. Though, even ignoring the Hamada era/Snyderverse, there have been many attempts to bring the franchise to life in the past. Years before the Arrowverse was even a glint in Greg Berlanti’s eye, Smallville brought DC to life on the small screen – all spear headed by Tom Welling as Clark Kent.
To many, Smallville is still the purest form of the DC Universe. It was a beautiful, campy look at the franchise through the melodramatic eyes of Tom Welling’s Clark Kent trying to find his place in the world. Even now, a decade after the show’s ending, fans are still hoping for a return to the world they grew to know and love across ten seasons of TV.
Tom Welling Wants To Play Batman
Yet while the animated Smallville revival has stalled with James Gunn focusing on new projects for the DC Universe, that doesn’t mean members of its cast can’t make a return. When speaking at Comic Con Liverpool, Tom Welling was asked what character he’d want to play in the rebooted franchise. And after some prompting from co-stars, the actor simply said “I mean, Batman.”
Tom Welling certainly has the build for Batman. And, given how often Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne are said to look similar, it would be fitting for James Gunn to recruit the Smallville star into the DC Universe. While it’s certainly not likely he’ll land the role, it would definitely be interesting to see him return in some form in this new era.
The Smallville animated revival is currently in talks, and there’s no word on when the series could release. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the DC Universe!
