A 45-year-old man in Harris County, Texas, died early Monday after becoming trapped inside a donation box while reportedly trying to retrieve clothing.
According to PEOPLE, the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office received a 911 call at approximately 1:36 a.m. from the man, who said he was stuck and unable to breathe. When emergency responders arrived, they found the man wedged inside the box in a position that restricted his breathing. Officials attempted to rescue him, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials Say Man Was Heard Struggling to Breathe on 911 Call
Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman told KHOU that the man’s distress was clearly audible during his emergency call. Herman said the caller repeatedly told dispatchers he couldn’t breathe. “Even on the 911 call, he’s heard saying, ‘I can’t breathe, I’m having problems breathing,’” he explained.
Authorities believe the man was attempting to collect clothing from the donation bin, which was equipped with an anti-theft mechanism designed to prevent tampering.
Officials also noted that the man could’ve been homeless and may have been seeking clothing or items for personal use.
Man Became Trapped Headfirst in the Donation Box
Assistant Deputy Chief Danny Garza said investigators believe the man fell headfirst into the donation box, but the swinging door mechanism closed on him, trapping him inside.
The design of these donation bins often includes metal flaps or panels that move to prevent theft, but can inadvertently lock individuals inside once they enter.
The man’s position and the box’s structure made it impossible for him to escape or breathe properly. Despite efforts by police and firefighters to reach him, the man was found unresponsive when the box was opened.
Organization Expresses Condolences After Tragic Incident
The Arms of Hope, the charitable organization that owns the donation box, issued a statement following the man’s death.
The group expressed sympathy for the victim’s loved ones and said they are cooperating with authorities as the investigation continues.
“Our hearts and prayers are with the individual and their loved ones during this difficult time. Because this is an active investigation, we are not able to share further details at this time,” the statement read.
