50 Best Rock and Metal Albums of the Last 25 Years (2000-2024)

Time flies when you’re rocking out and the last 25 years has given us some amazing rock and metal albums. It took plenty of discussion and debate amongst the Loudwire staffers, but we feel we’ve got a good representation of the albums that moved the needle in both hard rock and metal over the last quarter century.

It’s easy to think back to the beginning of the century when nu-metal was absolutely exploding. Acts such as Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit were ruling the world, but there were plenty more styles of music vying for attention.

Pop-punk was prominent early in the 2000s with Green Day delivering what could be the comeback album of the last 25 years in the rock opera American Idiot. And then you had a few years with emo giants My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy pushing that style to the forefront of the conversation. But while rock was commanding the airwaves, especially in the early 2000s, metal was evolving at a rapid pace with so many subgenres of metal vying for attention. There may have been no bigger metal band over the last quarter century than Slipknot, but we also saw System of a Down, Tool, Avenged Sevenfold and later Bring Me the Horizon becoming among the most commercially successful metal bands.
