EXCLUSIVE: British broadcaster Channel 4 made a documentary about Taylor Swift earlier this year and it will now air in the U.S.
The CW has picked up Taylor, which comes from director Guy King and Sandpaper Films, the company behind Netflix’s A Deadly American Marriage.
The Nexstar-owned broadcaster will air the one-off doc on Saturday December 13 at 8pm.
Taylor explores the musician’s 20-year career, a period that has seen her transcend the realm of pop star to become a cultural icon. Through interviews with high-profile commentators, industry insiders and fans, the documentary examines the forces that have shaped her trajectory and the devoted community she inspires. Channel 4 said it contains “rare archive” that will reveal fresh insights into Swift and her story, as the series charts her journey from ambitious teen with towering dreams to one of the most influential and scrutinized figures of our time.
King previously directed BBC’s Bombing Brighton and Channel 4’s The Fall: Skydive Murder Plot.
The doc is produced by Jessica Brady and archive producer Lina Caicedo and exec produced by Sandpaper’s Susannah Price and Henry Singer. Blue Ant oversees international sales.
Sandpaper’s Susannah Price told Deadline earlier this year that the company wanted to approach popular subjects with an investigative touch.
“We have a strand of smart documentaries about famous people that are analytical, truly independent, not made with the celebrity, and not biopics,” she said. “We are trying to say something about how they fit into society in a bigger world and with Taylor it was impossible to ignore how she had become this megastar at the beginning of the Eras Tour. Channel 4 were instrumental in coming to us and saying, ‘We think you could do something really original on this that is clever and thoughtful’.”
