Best Medicine begins in the aftermath of Josh Segarra‘s onscreen split from Abigail Spencer, setting the scene for Mark’s “hot guy summer.”
“I think Mark is looking in the mirror every morning telling himself, ‘Let’s go, hot guy summer,’” Segarra, 39, quipped during an exclusive interview with Us Weekly. “There’s a very fun reveal where I think all the available women in town are lining up [to date him]. I believe he is trying his best to get over the love of his life.”
Segarra teased that it wouldn’t be easy, adding, “Off we go. We’re in the casual phase to make sense of the heartbreak. It had to be a really deep love. There’s a saying that is like, ‘The humor in it all is that you’re trying to get through the pain.’ So we’ll definitely see him try to figure his way out of this stage in his life.”
He continued, “Part of that is meeting some new people. That’s what I would tell him — if he was sitting right here next to me. I would say, ‘Hey Mark, come on man. You got to get out there. You got to go on a couple dates. You have to make some new memories and see how they go. Maybe a new shoe will fit.”

Best Medicine follows a doctor (Josh Charles) who “moves from the city of Boston, Massachusetts, to a small practice in the East Coast fishing village where he vacationed as a child,” according to the official synopsis. The small town of Port Wenn is filled with a wide variety of residents, including Sheriff Mark and his now-ex-fiancée, Louisa (Spencer).
“Options are limited but he’s a man in a uniform,” Segarra noted. “He’s got something to offer.”
Spencer also spoke with Us about what to expect as the season plays out.
“Everybody loves Louisa. She’s the town schoolteacher. I would say she’s also the town’s tempest,” she teased to Us. “Louisa has always played by the rules, done the right thing and she’s kind of shaken things up by calling off her eight-year engagement with the sheriff.”
Spencer hinted that Louisa’s recent decisions will be “disruptive to the town” of Port Wenn, adding, “It’s fun to see her in an interesting pivot in her life. It makes space to maybe meet someone new. … But there is inherent conflict in the fact that they just broke up and then constantly see each other all the time because that is how small the town is.”
She continued, “Also they are best friends, so I think it’s painful. They love each other and they’re like two peas in a pod. But they just might not be the right fit for each other romantically.”
Looking ahead, Segarra expressed excitement about getting to see more of Mark.

“He loves his job. I think that he’s very good at his job. But I will also say that he has a little bit too much fun at his job,” he shared. “He doesn’t even have a gun so I don’t think that Port Wenn is necessarily the toughest, which is why he loves it. He just gets to have a little bit more fun. He gets some cats out of the trees and I don’t think there are too many noise disturbances. But he’s a fixture in the town and you will see him get a little down and dirty this season. You’ll see him really click into his element that he has been preparing for his whole life.”
Segarra had a blast bringing Mark — and Port Wenn — to life.
“They have found a way to put Mark in a lot of crazy situations — and that’s what I’m having the most fun with whenever I would read a script and I realized, ‘Oh, they got Mark in this zany thing.’ That’s my jam,” he continued. “You’re going to see a lot of very fun quirky events happen in Port Wenn where we’ve got a lot of traditions that we’re gonna introduce the watchers to. I’m excited to get involved in some hijinks.”
He concluded, “You’re going to see him cry, see him laugh, see him get very badly hurt and you’re going to see him try to take care of other people. They get very badly hurt. You’ll see him go on to do some detective work with Dr. Best. I’m excited for everyone to go on the journey with us.”
