History made! American rock climber Alex Honnold, 40, has completed the Taipei 101 skyscraper climb — without any ropes or safety net (free and solo) — in 1 hour and 31 minutes.

The free solo climb was broadcast live on Netflix on Saturday (January 24). He is the first person known to the building without any safety gear.
To note the Taipei 101, a 101-story skyscraper, is 1,667 feet (or 508 meters) and one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world. It was previously the world’s tallest building for several years until the Dubai built the Burj Khalifa. Several more skyscrapers have since surpassed the record. However, the 101-story building remains the tallest in the city of Taipei.
Honnold, who’s scaled many rock faces, told CNN that he had been wanting to scale a skyscraper, which is much different, for about a decade. Previously, Honnold has climbed the 3,000-foot El Capitan without any safety gear. He made history in 2017 by becoming the first to scale the Yosemite National Park mountain.

Alex Honnold Meets Wife After Climbing Taipei 101 Skyscraper (1,667 Ft) Without Ropes Or Safety Net In 1 Hour And 31 Minutes
Before Honnold’s January 2026 climb, urban climber Alain Robert, 63, also known as the “French Spiderman,” climbed the 101-story Taiwanese skyscraper as part of the building’s opening back in 2004. While Honnold followed in his steps, Robert gave commentary during CNN’s live coverage.
After Honnold summited the 101-story Taiwanese skyscraper, his wife, Sanni McCandless Honnold, met him at the top to give him a huge hug, kiss, and shoutout their children, June Honnold, 3, and Alice Summer Honnold, who will be 2 in February.
