Fans waiting to see what Matt Reeves has planned next for Gotham just got a small but interesting update. The Batman: Part II is still deep in development, and while details about the story remain mostly locked away, a new report suggests one major casting possibility has already fallen through. At the same time, new rumors about the film’s plot are starting to circulate.
The sequel to The Batman will once again see Robert Pattinson step back into the cape and cowl as Bruce Wayne. The next chapter in Reeves’ dark crime saga is building an impressive ensemble that reportedly includes Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Jeffrey Wright returning as Commissioner James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb / Penguin, and Barry Keoghan as the Joker.
Last week, a report claimed that Daniel Craig had been offered the role of Christopher Dent. In the rumored setup, Stan would portray Christopher’s son, Harvey Dent, the Gotham District Attorney who eventually becomes the infamous villain Two-Face.
However, a new report from World of Reel says Craig has decided to pass on the part. The actor is reportedly preparing to shoot Damien Chazelle’s upcoming film, which currently doesn’t have a title. That project will also star Cillian Murphy and Michelle Williams, and it appears Craig’s schedule is committed there.
Even though the casting situation may have shifted, rumors about the sequel’s story are continuing to make the rounds. World of Reel shared a rumor about the direction Reeves may be taking with the film’s central conflict:
“One persistent rumor I’ve been hearing about the film, which has kept its plot ultra-secret, is that it involves District Attorney Harvey Dent, Commissioner James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), and Batman forming an uneasy alliance to bring down a serial killer and the city’s entrenched mafia power.”
If that rumor turns out to be true, it sounds like Reeves is doubling down on the gritty crime-thriller tone that defined the first film. The idea of Batman, Gordon, and Dent teaming up against both a serial killer and Gotham’s organized crime would fit perfectly with the grounded detective vibe that made The Batman stand out.
Of course, none of this has been officially confirmed yet, so it’s best to treat these details as speculation for now. Reeves and Warner Bros. have kept a tight lid on the sequel’s story, which only adds to the intrigue.
Right now, The Batman: Part II is scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
