This week’s retro trailer is for the 1987 Australian sci-fi action film The Time Guardian. Back in the late ’80s, low-budget sci-fi filmmakers were swinging for the fences with ambitious ideas and whatever resources they could scrape together.

The story follows Ballard, played by Tom Burlinson, a time-traveling guardian sent from the future to 1980s Australia to prevent the alien invasion before it ever takes hold. Along the way he crosses paths with Petra, played by Carrie Fisher, a tough survivor who helps him navigate the unfamiliar past while battling the alien threat known as the Jen-Diki.
Despite its big ideas, The Time Guardian struggled critically and commercially upon release, with many reviewers pointing to its uneven pacing, awkward dialogue, and limited special effects.
Still, the film has lingered in cult sci-fi circles over the years, with fans appreciating its scrappy attempt to deliver a time-travel action story on a modest budget.
