LEGO fans have learned to expect the unexpected, but every once in a while the company still manages to throw out something that genuinely catches people off guard. Now, it looks like our first glimpse of the long-awaited LEGO Ideas Godzilla set may have just surfaced.
For those who follow LEGO Ideas, you already know the drill. The program lets fans submit concepts and vote on the builds they want to see turned into official sets.
Some awesome creations have come out of the initiative over the years, including Back to the Future’s Time Machine and the Orca boat from Jaws. Last year, another legendary franchise finally joined the lineup when the King of the Monsters himself, Godzilla, was approved to become an official LEGO set.
Now, it seems the first tease of that build might have slipped out early thanks to LEGO Magazine.
Fans over on the /r/Lego subreddit noticed something interesting in the magazine’s latest issue. An advertisement page highlighting previously released LEGO vehicles features several builds already on store shelves, including a Bugatti and the Batwing jet from Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. That part isn’t unusual. What caught people’s attention is the background.
Peeking over a cluster of city buildings appears to be a familiar silhouette that looks an awful lot like Godzilla looming over the skyline.
It’s subtle, but the shape is unmistakable. The massive head, the posture, the looming presence. It looks like the legendary kaiju is watching the city below, almost like he’s sizing up his next target.
LEGO dropping small hints like this is pretty common, especially for sets that are still in development. Considering how long the LEGO Ideas Godzilla project has been brewing, it isn’t surprising that the company might start planting early teases before a full reveal.
Of course, a few big questions remain about what the final set will actually look like.
One of the biggest mysteries is which version of Godzilla LEGO plans to use as inspiration. The character has evolved through decades of films, from the classic Toho era designs to modern interpretations seen in recent movies.
The set could lean into the retro look fans grew up with or go for something closer to the contemporary versions audiences recognize today.
Scale is another big unknown. LEGO could release a massive Godzilla build that towers over a miniature city, or it might be a mid-sized display model paired with buildings to recreate a kaiju attack scene.
