The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced a recall involving chocolate products sold by a California-based adult novelty company after testing revealed the presence of undeclared prescription drug ingredients.
According to KOMO News, the company Gear Isle recalled several products marketed as dietary supplements. FDA testing reportedly found that the chocolates contained sildenafil and tadalafil. Both ingredients are active pharmaceutical compounds used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Undeclared Prescription Ingredients Raise Health Concerns
In a public statement, the FDA explained the potential dangers.
“Use of products with undeclared active ingredients sildenafil and tadalafil may pose a threat to consumers because the active ingredient may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs (such as nitroglycerin) and may cause a significant drop in blood pressure that may be life-threatening,” the agency stated. Sildenafil is commonly prescribed under the brand name Viagra. Tadalafil is prescribed under the brand name Cialis.
The FDA emphasized that these ingredients pose increased risks for individuals with cardiac conditions, particularly those taking nitrate medications.
Because the ingredients were not disclosed on product labels, consumers may have unknowingly exposed themselves to potentially dangerous drug interactions.
Products Sold Online, Refunds Offered
The recalled chocolate products were primarily sold online. Gear Isle has advised customers to stop using the affected items immediately. Consumers are encouraged to seek refunds.
The FDA continues to monitor dietary supplements and novelty products for undeclared pharmaceutical ingredients. In recent years, the agency has issued multiple warnings about supplements marketed for sexual enhancement that secretly contain prescription-level substances.
For now, officials urge consumers to review product labels carefully and consult healthcare providers before using supplements that claim performance-enhancing effects.
