There’s a major staffing change underway at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center: Supriya Ganesh, who plays senior day shift resident Dr. Samira Mohan on “The Pitt,” is exiting the series ahead of Season 3, TVLine has confirmed.

Additionally, Ayesha Harris — who has recurred throughout Seasons 1 and 2 as senior night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis — has been promoted to series regular for Season 3.

“Dr. Ellis is pulling a double shift next season!! So excited y’all!!” Harris wrote on Instagram, adding, “Bittersweet I won’t be working with my girl [Supriya Ganesh].”

As a source tells TVLine, “The Pitt” is designed to mirror the real-life experience of doctors, nurses, and students within a teaching hospital, which often includes a revolving door of staff.

Ganesh’s exit marks the second major cast departure following Season 1 regular Tracy Ifeachor (who played former senior day shift resident Dr. Heather Collins).

The Pitt Season 2 Set the Stage for Samira’s Exit

Ganesh’s exit doesn’t come as a complete surprise. In the Season 2 premiere, Mohan laid out her post-residency plan to Dr. Cassie McKay, revealing that she had committed to a partnership-track position at a hospital back in New Jersey so she could stay close to and support her mother. But in that same breath, Samira explained that the future she had carefully organized was already shifting: Her mother was getting married, selling their house, and preparing to spend a year traveling the world on a cruise with a man she’d known for less than a year.

“It’s like she’s planned her career and her life around this move back to Jersey,” Ganesh previously told TVLine. “I think in a later episode, she says, ‘I thought I’d go back to Jersey, then work on finding a relationship. And then I’d figure out when to have kids.’ That’s why [Samira] hasn’t really put down roots [in Pittsburgh]. And so when that falls apart for her, I think it’s incredibly destabilizing. She feels like she has no sense of direction or purpose.”

Later in Season 2, Samira confided in Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi that she was considering applying for a PTMC fellowship, prompting her superior to suggest a career in geriatrics — a recommendation Dr. Robby echoed just hours later. But already late to apply, there was no guarantee Samira would ultimately be able to stay, a question that has lingered heading into the final hours of Season 2.

Clocking In Full-Time: Dr. Parker Ellis’ Season 3 Upgrade

Ayesha Harris made her debut as night shifter Dr. Parker Ellis in The Pitt Season 1, Episode 12, just as PTMC staff began treating victims of the Pittfest shooting.

After appearing in the final four episodes of Season 1, Harris returned in the Season 2 premiere, first seen overseeing rounds before clocking out. She resurfaced midway through the season as one of the doctors named in the malpractice suit, with her deposition preceding Mel’s. All told, she appears in six of the season’s 15 episodes.

Harris clocks back in for the remainder of Season 2 beginning with Episode 13, and will return as a series regular in Season 3. Her previous TV credits include ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” NBC’s “Good Girls” and “This Is Us,” Netflix’s “Glamorous,” Prime Video’s “Daisy Jones and the Six,” and Showtime’s “The L Word: Generation Q.”

Variety first reported the news of Ganesh’s exit and Harris’ promotion.
