Hellboy Creator Mike Mignola Expands the Lands Unknown Universe with A New Graphic Novel, URI TUPKA AND THE DEVILS
The Legendary Cartoonist’s New Graphic Novel Arrives from Dark Horse Comics
in November 2026
This November, trailblazing cartoonist and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola will release his third original graphic novel in two years. Following the success of 2025’s Bram Stoker Award-nominated Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown and this year’s highly anticipated Uri Tupka and the Gods, Mignola is expanding the Lands Unknown Universe he’s creating with cartoonist Ben Stenbeck with a new folktale anthology exploring the origins of legends of this strange new shared universe. Written and drawn by Mignola with colors from Dave Stewart and letters from Clem Robins, URI TUPKA AND THE DEVILS is due out in November from Dark Horse Comics.
“Uri has found the gods but he still has questions and so he’s gone to look for the answers—In a nightmare castle full of devils!” Mignola adds, “See Uri change shape, tumble through his own inner workings and take a pretty savage beating. I put the poor guy through the wringer in this one and I feel a little bad about that, but you gotta do what you gotta do, and these “Lands Unknown’’ are not all sunshine and flowers.”
Picking up after the events of Uri Tupka and the Gods, URI TUPKA AND THE DEVILS follows the weary hero on a new quest for the secret history of the universe. After his search for the ancient gods ended with some answers and even more questions, heretic and theologian Uri Tupka travels further to discover the truth about the darkness before the world began and what it means for mankind. He visits a Baron’s library full of esoteric books beyond even Uri’s imagination. Each night in the library brings new insight and clarity, but threatens to consume Uri as his unquenchable desire for understanding sends him down a dangerous path.
Here’s what people are saying about Uri Tupka and the Gods and
Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown:
“Now, as it regards this new book, Uri Tupka and the Gods, it just might be up there with Mignola’s best-ever work.” — COMICS BEAT
“Mignola is justly celebrated as a visual stylist, not just of horror comics but of comics writ large. While another artist might rely on grotesque specifics to frighten the reader, Mignola’s insinuating expanses of black ink conceal all but the most necessary details of a rich and malevolent world, filled with monstrosities, yes, but also oddities, many of them delightful…. This book is a good reminder that the history of imaginative literature is also the history of illustrated literature.” — NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW
“Deliciously macabre.” — FORBES
“Mike Mignola is back, and this time, the Hellboy creator is inviting us into a wholly new universe of eerie, whimsical, and darkly enchanting folktales… it’s a portal into a realm where the strange turns familiar and the familiar seems strange.” — BOING BOING
“This is Mignola’s Grimms’ Fairy Tales.”— FANBASE PRESS
“Unlike someone like Walt Disney (the man, and eventually the company), Mignola isn’t looking to modernize these old pieces of folklore and fairy tales – he wants to peel back the layers closer to the roots:” — POPVERSE
“This isn’t just a new story by Mike Mignola. We’re being presented to an entire new World, a charming, complex, magical world, where from every corner comes a handful of inspiring new characters. If you weren’t there the moment Mignola revolutionized comics creating Hellboy, this is your chance to get onboard, because he’s about to start a brand new revolution.” — Fábio Moon (Daytripper)
Uri Tupka and the Devils is a 104-page hardcover that will be released in bookstores and comic shops on November 16, 2026. Follow Dark Horse Comics on social media for more news, announcements, and updates.
