I think this was a really great end to the first season of Best Medicine, it gave lots of answers to questions that I have been wondering for the majority of the season but also gave lots more questions leading into season two.
I am very glad that the threat of a salmon farm is no longer for Portwenn and I love how it came about. We finally got to see how Martin really feels about the town and despite his normal attitude he really does care deeply for the people in Portwenn. It’s just a shame that Glendon has now taken it upon himself to destroy what Martin has built. It will definitely be interesting watching the story play out next season, and if Martin does lose his licence what will he and the Portwenn residents do then.
I don’t really know where the show has left Elaine and Al in terms of progression in their lives. Obviously the scene where they confessed their love was beautiful but is Al going to give up all his college places just to stay with Elaine in Portwenn. We appear to be having a reverse storyline to the one we had at the start of the season with Elaine not wanting to get into a relationship as she was leaving, but now it could be Al leaving.
Al finally revealed to Bert that he knew that he wasn’t his dad. We didn’t get too much more explanation on what happened for Bert to not be the father other than that it seems that Al’s mother may have cheated on Bert.
One thing I think is great about Martin is that no matter what he will always fight for medical justice for someone, we saw it earlier in the season with Agnes and the same rule applied for Sigrid this episode. That is where he and his ex Eden are similar although I really don’t think they are compatible, I don’t think that Martin believes they are either but after what he heard earlier that night he just needed someone to spend some time with.
I have to admit I thought it was really lovely that Mark offered to have a child with Louisa, he could tell that she had been wanting one and I guess it isn’t too far of a stretch to imagine that they spoke about having children when they were in a relationship.
As much as I do love the idea I just can’t see it working, Louisa is absolutely in it just for the baby and to have someone to help her raise the baby. Whereas I think there will be more than that for Mark, he hasn’t ever really gotten over her so I’m not sure in the long term that this is something that is going to seriously work. Plus what happens if Martin and Louisa do end up getting together, Mark was mad enough about it when they kissed let alone when his child will be involved.
I loved the Greg and George wedding to round out the season, when it got mentioned in the last episode that they were already married I did think it was a shame that they didn’t get to share that with the town. It was such a great sequence to watch everyone pass around the rings and then for them to be given to Greg and George. Jason Veasey (George) and Stephen Spinella (Greg) made that scene all the more perfect with the emotion in the eyes and voices.
I truly cannot wait to see what this incredible cast are going to bring in season two!
