I think Heath Ledger improvising this scene because the explosives had failed to go off on time is everyone's favorite Dark Knight factoid but it's completely false. The building had been "cut up" into three sections and Heath was supposed to look back and play with the detonator after the first section detonated.
My theory is that Heath probably improvised some parts like him throwing up his arms in frustration or something and that story morphed into him improving the whole thing.
The demolition team spent about 3 weeks rigging the building for the explosions and even longer doing test runs and simulations. They knew exactly what they were doing lol
