Octet, the Lin-Manuel Miranda-directed film version of Dave Malloy’s stage musical has announced an eight-person cast that includes Jonathan Groff, Rachel Zegler, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Gaten Matarazzo, among others.

The castings were announced today by Miranda and his 5000 Broadway Productions.

In addition to Groff, Zegler, Ralph and Matarazzo, the cast will include Amanda Seyfried, Phillipa Soo, Paul-Jordan Jansen and Tramell Tillman.

As previously announced, Julie Oh (Head of Film & TV, 5000 Broadway Productions), along with John Skidmore for Best Kept Secret Productions, and Luis A. Miranda, Jr. (President, 5000 Broadway Productions) will serve as producers on Octet. Malloy (Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812) is writing the screenplay.

The synopsis: Eight internet-obsessed people meet in a church basement and lock their phones in a box. The musical follows the octet as they struggle with digital dependency, charting their compulsions using only the analog vibrancy of their own voices.

Groff (Mindhunter, Broadway’s Just in Time, Merrily We Roll Along, Hamilton, Spring Awakening) has been cast as the character “Henry.” Groff is represented by CAA and Shelter PR.

Jansen (Broadway/National Tour, Sweeney Todd, & Juliet) as “Ed.” Jansen is repped by DGRW.

Matarazzo (Stranger Things; Broadway: Sweeney Todd, Les Misérables, Dear Evan Hansen) as “Toby.” Matarazzo is repped by Intention, UTA, Stewart, Jill Fritzo PR & McKuin Frankel.

Ralph (Abbott Elementary, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit; Broadway: Dreamgirls) as “Paula.” Ralph is repped by CAA, Neon Kite and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christoper.

Seyfried (The Housemaid, The Testaments of Ann Lee) as “Jessica.” Seyfried is repped by Innovative Artists/Frankfurt, Kurnit, Klein & Selz.

Soo (Dopesick, Over the Moon; Broadway: Hamilton, Camelot) as “Karly.” Soo is repped by UTA, Anonymous Content and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Trattner Auerbach Hynick Jaime LeVine Sample & Klein.

Tillman (Severance, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning; Broadway: The Great Society) as “Marvin.” Tillman is repped by UTA, Principal Entertainment, Jill Fritzo PR, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Trattner Auerbach Hynick Jaime LeVine Sample & Klein.

Zegler (West Side Story; West End/Broadway: Evita, Romeo & Juliet) as “Velma.” Zegler is repped by WME.

Executive Producers are Johnny Holland, Owen Panettieri, and Diana DiMenna. The film is being financed and Executive Produced by Sander Jacobs, Caren Jacobs, TodayTix Group, Jeffrey Seller, Teresa Tsai, and John Gore for Broadway.com. Writer and composer Malloy is adapting his own book of a musical and will also serve as Executive Producer.

Octet will be Miranda’s follow up to his two-time Academy Award nominated film directorial debut tick, tick…BOOM! Oh served as a producer at Imagine Entertainment where she produced tick, tick…BOOM! and oversaw the film’s acquisition by Netflix.
