After months of teasing a supposed “rock” pivot — and plenty of internet discourse about what exactly that even means in 2026 — Charli xcx has finally dropped “Rock Music,” a chaotic, self-aware new single that both fulfills and trolls every expectation surrounding her post-BRAT era.

The track arrives after Charli sparked debate in a recent British Vogue cover story by declaring, “I think the dancefloor is dead, so now we’re making rock music.” She later clarified the comment in a teasing Instagram caption: “a video of me making a song called ‘rock music’ that is not actually rock music which is funny because i never said i was making a rock album. love you xx”

Naturally, “Rock Music” might only constitute “rock” in the eyes of certain beholders. The song crashes together distorted guitar and twitchy electronic production to create what feels akin to having a panic attack at a rave. Charli deadpans her way through lyrics about overstimulation, self-destruction and emotional numbness, at one point declaring, “The nerve damage is real, but it’s the only way to feel something.”

The accompanying video, directed by longtime collaborator Aidan Zamiri who also helmed Charli’s recent mockumentary The Moment) doubles down on the aesthetic overload. Cigarette mountains, exploding drum kits, grimy city streets and televisions tossed from windows flash by in rapid succession. There’s also a cameo from Charli’s husband, George Daniel of the 1975, alongside producer collaborators Finn Keane and A.G. Cook.

The release continues an absurdly prolific stretch for Charli following the seemingly endless afterlife of BRAT. In the past year, she’s moved heavily into film acting while also contributing music to the Margot Robbie-starring adaptation of Wuthering Heights and the pop star-centric Mother Mary.

The artist will presumably show off some new rock moves during a handful of summer festival appearances, which include Lollapalooza in Chicago, Outside Lands in San Francisco and the U.K.’s Reading and Leeds festivals in August.
