One of the most anticipated albums of the summer finally has a release date. Gracie Abrams’ third LP, the 16-track Daughter From Hell, will arrive July 17 from Interscope, with lead single “Hit the Wall” emerging on Thursday (May 14). Click here to pre-order
Daughter From Hell re-teams Abrams, the daughter of Hollywood titan J.J. Abrams, with songwriter/producer Aaron Dessner of the National, with whom she made her 2023 debut Good Riddance and its smash 2024 follow-up, The Secret of Us. Dessner is currently riding high thanks to the out-of-the-box success of Noah Kahan’s new album, The Great Divide,
“Whoa whoa whoa,” Abrams wrote on Instagram. “Freaking out. I am so ready for it to be yours.” At last week’s Met Gala, she spoke on the red carpet about “Hit the Wall,” calling it, “the introduction to this new chapter, and I feel grateful and relieved that this is the introduction. I love the song so much and I love the people I made it with.” Abrams has also reportedly filmed a video for “Hit the Wall” at an abandoned Catholic seminary in Surrey, England.
The Secret of Us debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the hit single “I Love You, I’m Sorry,” which has more than a billion plays at Spotify. Another single from the deluxe edition of the album, “That’s So True,” performed even better and is closing in on 1.8 billion worldwide Spotify streams.
“I can’t believe it’s been six years since Gracie and I started making songs together,” Dessner wrote on Instagram. “I’m deeply grateful for every song we have made and the way we have kept challenging ourselves and growing together as collaborators and friends, sometimes hitting the wall, and then pushing and breaking through. It has been such a journey since we began working on Daughter From Hell two years ago. We started on the same day that we recorded ‘That’s So True’ and ‘I Told You Things’ at Electric Lady Studios in New York — multiple songs on this album were made in that time. Since then we have searched and searched for songs in [Dessner’s upstate New York studio] Long Pond, in London and back at Electric Lady. You’ll hear us expanding our musical vocabulary and pushing into uncharted waters sonically, and most of all the sharpening and deepening of Gracie’s lyricism and expression in ways that continue to astound me. I believe this album contains absolutely the most moving and powerful work we have done together. It feels elevated in every way and I can’t WAIT to share it with you all. I’ll share more details soon on all the dear friends who helped us along the way.”
In late December, Abrams teamed with Dessner and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon to release the single “Sold Out.” The track was written following a 2024 school shooting but the artists opted to put it out last month following several recent, tragic gun-related incidents.
Amid the new album activity, Abrams will make her acting debut in writer/director Halina Reijn’s next film Please, which will be released by A24. Today, the cast was augmented by Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga star Tom Burke.
