Summary

The Exorcist: Deceiver is the second chapter in Blumhouse’s trilogy, continuing after the harrowing ending of ‘Believer’ with a story that involves multiple forms of exorcism and the presence of evil spirits. Director David Gordon Green’s involvement in ‘Deceiver’ is uncertain, as there are reports of dissatisfaction with the first movie and the possibility of him stepping back from the franchise. The release date for ‘Deceiver’ is April 15th, 2025, but potential delays may occur due to strikes. The cast has yet to be officially announced, but Leslie Odom Jr. and Ellen Burstyn may reprise their roles from ‘Believer’.

The Exorcist: Deceiver is the upcoming second chapter in Blumhouse’s rebooted Exorcist trilogy, and when it arrives in 2025 it will continue the chilling tale after Believer’s harrowing ending. Halloween reboot director David Gordon Green turns his attention to another horror franchise with his plans to create a new sequel The Exorcist trilogy, starting with The Exorcist: Believer, which followed Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton) as Victor, a father whose daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) and her friend Katherine (Olivia Marcum) disappeared into the woods for three days, only to come back possessed.

They enlist the help of Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn), who claims that more than one form of exorcism may be necessary to rid the girls of evil spirits. Sadly, by the ending of Believer, the demon Lamashtu’s venture from Hell manages to claim one of the girls — an unexpected and sorrowful finale that sets up the story of The Exorcist: Deceiver. The first movie in the rebooted trilogy both brought back characters like Chris from the original 1973 The Exorcist and fleshed out the lore, leaving the door wide open for 2025’s The Exorcist: Deceiver.

With the first movie in Blumhouse’s rebooted The Exorcist trilogy still in theaters there’s already news on The Exorcist: Deceiver. Director David Gordon Green has been candid about his future working on the trilogy. While originally thought to be in the chair for all three new Exorcist movies, Green may step back from the franchise for The Exorcist: Deceiver and beyond. When asked in an interview with Collider whether he still planned to return to complete the story, Green explained:

We’ll see, we’ll see. The idea is we built a road map that I think has so many different avenues that we could take. The world of exorcism and possession is so vast. The world of spirituality is so curious to me that there are so many questions that I have. As the movie finds itself existing in the world over the next few weeks, I think a lot of those questions will be answered. [I have a] road map [for the next two movies]. I wanna make sure I’m not so meticulously locked into a structure or a concept that I can’t deviate [and give myself some wiggle room to take] an opportunity or an improvisation or a detour that feels appealing

While Green’s comments don’t confirm or deny he’s stepping back from the project, the response to the first movie hasn’t been universally positive. Early reports suggested Blumhouse and Universal aren’t 100% satisfied with the end-result and early performance of Green’s first rebooted Exorcist movie. That’s not to say the studio is placing blame on the director at all, and it’s still far too early to tell if Believer has been a flop or not, but it does mean the chances of David Gordon Green handing over the reins for The Exorcist: Deceiver are much higher.

The Exorcist: Believer Sequel Is Confirmed

The sequel to The Exorcist: Believer is confirmed. Blumhouse and Universal announced The Exorcist: Deceiver was first confirmed in July 2023, when the trailer for the first movie in the rebooted trilogy arrived, alongside its release date. However, it was reported that director David Gordon Green had been tapped to direct a trilogy of Exorcist movies as early as 2021 (via Bloody Disgusting).

The Exorcist: Deceiver release date will be April 15th, 2025, and the film will likely debut in theaters like its predecessor. Though this does give a decent amount of time between The Exorcist: Believer release date and Deceiver’s projected premiere, there are no guarantees that delays won’t happen.

The Exorcist: Deceiver Cast

The Exorcist: Deceiver cast has yet to be revealed officially, but could see Leslie Odom Jr. (Central Park) return as Victor, Lidya Jewett (Good Girls) as Angela, newcomer Olivia Marcum as Katherine, and Ellen Burstyn (Requiem for a Dream) as Chris MacNeil. Jennifer Nettles (The Righteous Gemstones) could return as Katherine’s mother Miranda along with her husband, Tony, who is portrayed by Norbert Leo Butz (Dan in Real Life). However, until any official announcements are made, the cast of The Exorcist: Believer 2 is entirely speculative.

The Exorcist: Deceiver Story Details

Possessed Children in The Exorcist Believer

The Exorcist: Deceiver plot is still being kept under wraps. Director David Gordon Green does reportedly have a story plan for the rebooted The Exorcist trilogy mapped out, however. The ending of Believer also revealed a few potential plot beats for The Exorcist: Deceiver. Katherine, the daughter of Miranda and Tony, was dragged to Hell by the demon Lamashtu. Tony’s attempts to save his daughter by “choosing” her backfired, as Lamashtu’s offer was a trick. This could hugely factor into The Exorcist: Deceiver.

Tony and Miranda could struggle to accept that Angela survived when Katherine didn’t, especially since it was Tony’s choice that sealed her fate. Now that they know demons like Lamashtu exist, and that practices like Voodoo, mysticism, and exorcisms are legitimate, there’s no telling what they may try to get their daughter back — and it could well be their efforts involve Angela or Victor being in danger, since it’s clear that Tony was more than willing to sacrifice Angela to spare Katherine. What Universal and Blumhouse have planned for the plot of The Exorcist: Deceiver is unclear, but there’s definitely no shortage of directions the story could take.
