Zoe Saldaña is a proud mom of three kids with husband Marco Perego, and she seems to love taking them everywhere with her. Of course, fame means that sometimes their outings can be disrupted by fans — though not always, largely thanks to the fact that Saldaña has appeared in blue and green makeup in some of her best-known projects (the Avatar and Avengers franchises, respectively). “I can take my kids to a coffee shop and I’ll be recognized of course, sometimes,” Saldaña told CBS News on July 17. “And sometimes I won’t.”
Saldaña frequently shares glimpses of her family’s travels and fun times on social media and generally includes her kids in her work life. In January 2023, she posted an Instagram video of her kids recreating a scene from “Zoolander,” seemingly showing that her kids might have inherited a bit of their mom’s love for the camera. She also told InStyle in 2022 that her appearances in movies like “Guardians of the Galaxy” have given her some “street cred” with her kids.
“I see how he’s trying to place me in his mind like, ‘OK, you’re Mama, but you’re also Gamora,'” she shared of her youngest. Saldaña also brought her kids out with her when she accepted her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2018.
The actor has been open about the care she’s taking to raise her kids the right way. “When you look at parenting, the whole thing about matriarchy and patriarchy, and Daddy’s little girl and Mama’s boys — my husband and I find that completely ludicrous and absolutely unhealthy for the upbringing of a child,” she told People in 2018. “You’re giving them a very distorted and limited view on what a female role is supposed to be in a family and what a male role is supposed to be.”
Speaking with People in October, Saldaña said parenting is the “most amazing thing, but it’s real.” “We are here to set very big tones for them in life on how to be, how to react, how to regulate, how to repair, how to heal, how to stand up for yourself. So they’re going to be constantly mirroring what you do, knowing that you’re being observed at all times,” she explained. “It definitely makes you a lot more mindful than you have ever been in your whole entire life.”
The actor also said she and Perego are “teaching our little boys to honor women and to celebrate women.” “We’re very hard on our boys the same way we’re hard on women. And boys are encouraged to be strong and to suppress their emotions. And then once you learn to do that so much for so long, you become completely excommunicated from your feelings,” Saldaña said. “We definitely understood the assignments and accepted it knowing that we were raising boys during a time when women’s movements are so important.”
