Fast & Furious has continued to grow from strength to strength and the universe is actively growing larger, as seen by the number of upcoming sequels and spin-offs currently in development. Debuting with The Fast and the Furious in 2001, this appeared to be a standard street racing series of films, however, thanks to the vision of star Vin Diesel and creatives at Universal Studios, it’s become a huge franchise. The 11 Fast & Furious movies, including the 10 main movies and the 2019 spinoff Hobbs & Shaw, have impressively already grossed more than $7 billion globally. Consequently, it’s no wonder that the franchise continues to expand with follow-ups and off-shoots.
With the action growing more ridiculous and exhilarating than ever, the Fast & Furious franchise refuses to quit. While Fast X was initially marketed as the first entry in a two-part finale to the main series, it was subsequently rumored that Fast X’s ending could be followed by two direct sequels to conclude Dom’s main story. In addition to that, Vin Diesel has announced work on a number of other sequels and spinoffs, elaborating that there would be some major announcements following the final mainline films. However, some details have now been released about what could be coming in the five proposed spin-offs and sequels, as well as where these movies are in various stages of development.
5 Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs
Shortly after the release of Fast X, Dwayne Johnson confirmed that a Fast & Furious Hobbs spinoff would be happening. The rumored title for the movie is Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Reyes, with the movie confirmed to star Johnson as Hobbs with Jason Momoa reprising his role as Fast X villain Dante Reyes. However, it’s unclear if this movie will be replacing the previously proposed Hobbs & Shaw 2 movie, or is entirely separate.
Hobbs’ solo spinoff is set to serve as a sequel to both Fast X and Hobbs & Shaw, bridging the gap into the upcoming as-yet-untitled Fast & Furious 11. Though the film is still on hold because of the ongoing strikes, Chris Morgan is still confirmed to write alongside a significant list of producers including Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel. While the release date is still tentative, it is expected to be released before 2025 when the next entry is currently slated and certainly has a huge level of star power behind it to ensure this project gets made.
4 Fast & Furious 11
Louis Leterrier, director of Fast X, as well as several other popular action and heist movies such as Transporter and Now You See Me, was announced to direct the eleventh entry in the main series in April 2023. Shortly after, it was also announced that Christina Hodson, screenwriter for 2023’s The Flash, and Oren Uziel would be the screenwriters for the project. Diesel also announced that Fast & Furious 11’s release date would be in 2025. The official release date remains April 4, 2025, however, it is possible that this could change due to the halted production with ongoing strikes.
Fast & Furious 11 is due to continue the story of Fast X and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Reyes, so exactly what will happen remains to be seen. The mid-credits scene of Fast X does show Reyes making contact with Shaw and declaring him his next target, so it’s safe to assume that Hobbs and Reyes will follow the story of Agent Hobbs forced into a game of cat and mouse where he is the prey. The final scenes of Fast X also left it unclear whether Dominic Toretto and his son survived the trap laid out for them by Reyes as they drove off the edge of a dam.
3 Fast & Furious 12
Fast & Furious 12 is the most tentative entry on this list as it has only been teased by the star of the franchise, Vin Diesel. However, Universal has yet to confirm if Fast & Furious 12 is happening or whether the Fast 11 will conclude the main series instead. In April 2023, Diesel made comments about the studio having watched Fast X and then asked if the finale could be made into three parts (via Variety).
Although this hasn’t been confirmed by the studio itself and no other names have been announced attached to the project, it is a possibility that the story will be played out over a trilogy. However, it would be challenging for Vin Diesel to end with Fast & Furious 12 in a satisfying way, just in terms of the sheer time it would take to finally tell the whole story. The gap between Fast X and 11 is already two years without any delays; assuming the final entry is released a year or two later, the story may become too drawn out.
The story as it stood at the end of Fast X already felt like a larger film cut in half thanks to the abrupt ending, so delaying the final conclusion until an even later sequel could aggravate fans and appear as more of a cash grab from the studio. Furthermore, there is such a large range of interesting characters and stories that could be told through a number of different spin-offs. Whether the franchise decides to follow stories from individual characters, agencies in the films, or something else entirely, there is plenty of room for them to explore the wider world without delaying the ending of the main series.
2 Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw 2
Following the release of Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw in 2019, Universal approved a sequel to be made starring Dwayne Johnson and began development with writer Chris Morgan agreeing to return for the project. However, the scale and ambition of the project as well as Johnson’s vision to create something that would be the “antithesis of Fast & Furious,” the film got pushed back. Due to the global pandemic and strikes, the Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw 2 movie has received little to no updates since that time.
The confirmation of a Hobbs solo spinoff could also indicate that the direct sequel is no longer going ahead, but Shaw could also make an appearance in an upcoming project and lead into a spin-off sequel for the Johnson and Statham. Otherwise, Johnson may end up starring in a solo spin-off series that focuses on the adventures and cases of Deckard Hobbs and could see cameos from others in the franchise. No official comments to declare the Hobbs & Shaw sequel could also mean that this project will eventually go ahead, but is currently pushed to the back of the line with other projects being prioritized.
1 Fast & Furious All-Female Spinoff
One such example of a spinoff that has already been announced and confirmed to be in development is a female-led Fast & Furious spinoff. In 2019, it was confirmed that Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet would be screenwriters for the project. Perlman was one of the writers on Guardians of the Galaxy and also worked with Robertson-Dworet on Captain Marvel, while Beer wrote and directed the 2023 Pet Sematary: Bloodlines movie.
Looking at their work, it’s hard to say exactly what could be involved in this spinoff aside from strong female leads, but the Fast & Furious franchise has a wealth of incredible female characters that could make this into something special. Doubtless, with the huge love and support for this franchise, additional spinoffs are being considered as Diesel alluded to in 2015 (via Variety). Still, it may be some time before more announcements of franchise off-shoots are made.
