Summary
Keanu Reeves’ John Constantine gets ready to take on Peter Stormare’s Lucifer Morningstar in a new Constantine 2 fan poster. While a new DC Universe is on its way, an old DC franchise is making a comeback as Reeves’ Constantine 2 is going forward, following its release in 2005. While no release date has been set yet for Constantine 2, he and the original director, Francis Lawrence, are onboard, as the world waits to learn more about the sequel and how Reeves’ Constantine will return.
While his return has not been properly announced yet, Stormare revealed as early as November 2020 that Constantine 2 is being worked on, suggesting that his version of Lucifer will also be back for the new installment. Imagining what their second encounter would look like, almirondesign shared new Constantine 2 fan art, as John goes “back to hell” in the Elseworlds-based movie. Will Constantine 2 Happen In James Gunn’s DC Universe?
Despite being set in its own continuity, it is worth debating whether or not Constantine 2 should take place in James Gunn’s DC Universe rather than be standalone. Even though Elseworlds projects are part of DC Studios’ strategy, Constantine 2 could benefit from being part of the DC Universe. Not only would Gunn get a major talent like Reeves in his property, but this version of Constantine would be able to get more exposure to other key DC characters.
This would be similar to Matt Ryan’s Constantine in the Arrowverse, where he got to engage with various superheroes, while mainly being a player on Legends of Tomorrow. In Reeves’ case, he would be able to be one of the veteran heroes in this continuity, since he was around in the early 2000s in his world. An established Constantine could also be what leads to the formation of Justice League Dark, a team that Warner Bros. have been trying for several years to bring to life in live-action.
While the original Constantine movie didn’t really allude to other DC connections, the massive time jump into the sequel – combined with its relatively self-contained storyline meaning other heroes perhaps could have existed in the background – mean this doesn’t preclude it from entering into the larger franchise. The possibility of this version of Constantine being retroactively set in the DC Universe certainly exists, as Reeves and Gunn have had conversations about Constantine 2. Hopefully, more updates about Constantine 2 its precise place in the DC Universe will be revealed sooner rather than later.
