James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy has added Venezuelan actress María Gabriela de Faría to its cast. Known for her role in Deadly Class, de Faría will portray the DC Comics villain The Engineer in the Warner Bros. production. Her character, Angela Spica, also known as The Engineer, is part of the movie’s villain ensemble and possesses powers derived from nanotechnology embedded in her body.
Created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, The Engineer is a relatively recent addition to the DC universe, first appearing in The Authority #1 in 1999. De Faría’s casting as Angela Spica represents the second iteration of a character with the moniker of The Engineer in DC Comics.
DC Studios is also developing a movie focusing on The Authority. Although this film is currently in the early stages without a writer, director, or release date, the inclusion of María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer in Superman: Legacy could potentially connect her character to that project.
Set to begin production in March 2024, Superman: Legacy promises a fresh take on the iconic superhero saga, featuring David Corenswet stepping into the role of Superman, previously portrayed by Henry Cavill. Joining Corenswet in this new chapter of the Superman story is Rachel Brosnahan, who will bring to life the character of Lois Lane, the intrepid journalist and Superman’s love interest.

The choice to focus on the early years of his career is a bold move that could potentially breathe new life into the character and appeal to a younger generation of fans.
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
