Warner Bros. Discovery has now become infamous for scrapping nearly completed films for tax write-offs. Luckily, it seems James Gunn’s Superman reboot and every other DC Studios project may be safe from cancellation.

The cancellation of Coyote vs. ACME seems to be the straw that broke the camel’s back when it came to Warner Bros. Discovery’s reputation. After the company canceled the nearly finished film for tax write-offs in a similar way to Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt, people across the industry began to realize this process could happen to any film, and there’s no reason to trust WBD to not do it.

Luckily, it seems as though DC Studios is safe from being made a tax write-off by Warner Bros. Discovery. According to a new report by Deadline, James Gunn’s Superman reboot and any other films made by their studio are safe from being canceled by the powers that be:

“Also, what does the Coyote vs. ACME move by Warner Bros Discovery say to DC bosses Peter Safran and James Gunn? Can their movies or projects be killed at a last-minute notice? Along with Chris DeFaria, Gunn is a producer on Coyote vs. ACME. The Guardians of the Galaxy architect was a co-scribe on the movie. We understand that the filmmaker-friendly Gunn and Safran’s greenlights moving forward are bonafide and not in danger of any tax tricks,” Deadline reveals.

It’s unclear exactly why DC Studios projects in particular are safe from Warner Bros. Discovery and their tax write-off spree. It could be that these projects were greenlit following the WBD merger, or that the higher-ups simply trust the DC Universe reboot more than Coyote vs. ACME. Either way, it seems as though James Gunn’s Superman will live to fly another day!

Superman’s DC Universe Future

Superman: Legacy is a much-anticipated project, given that Clark Kent has been an integral part of the DC Universe for over 80 years, with various iterations and adaptations across different media. The movie promises to explore the character’s origins and his struggles to balance his dual identities as Clark Kent and Superman while fighting off villains and saving the world.

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
