Blue Beetle is the DC Universe’s first Latino superhero movie, further diversifying the superhero genre. In a recent interview with TheWrap, Xolo Maridueña, star of the highly-anticipated DCU film, hinted at the exciting prospect of familiar faces making an appearance.
Xolo Maridueña, who has been launched into the limelight with his role in Netflix’s Cobra Kai, remained tight-lipped about the specifics. However, he promised that audiences wouldn’t be disappointed, hinting at multiple surprise characters in Blue Beetle.
“I think if you’re a DC aficionado, there’s going to be more than one character that you recognize,” stated Maridueña, teasing the audience with possible cameos. However, the actor kept the details close to his chest, adding only, “I can assure you of that.”
Heavyweights like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman could potentially share the screen with Blue Beetle, driving up anticipation among movie-goers. More importantly, this could mark a pivotal moment in the DC cinematic universe’s growth, emphasizing the interconnectedness of its rich and diverse character roster.
Who is DC’s Blue Beetle?
Blue Beetle is one of DC’s lesser-known heroes, but he has a dedicated fanbase nonetheless. Created in 1939 by Charles Wojtkowski, Blue Beetle has gone through several iterations over the years. The Jaime Reyes version of the character was introduced during the events of 2006’s Infinite Crisis and quickly became a fan-favorite.
In the pages of DC Comics, Jaime Reyes is a teenager from El Paso, Texas. Jaime discovers a scarab beetle-shaped device that bonds with his body, giving him access to an advanced suit of armor and various powers. He becomes the latest in a long line of Blue Beetles and must learn to balance his newfound abilities with his everyday life.
Angel Manuel Soto is directing Blue Beetle from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. The full cast of the movie also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Trujillo, Susan Sarandon and Harvey Guillén.
