Despite struggling at the box office, The Marvels was a colorful and imaginative romp into the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, The Marvels director Nia DaCosta reveals the original pitch for the movie was even weirder, as it involved Adam Warlock and time travel.
The Marvels director Nia DaCosta recently found herself speaking to Jake’s Takes about the MCU blockbuster. During the interview, she was asked if Marvel Studios put any restrictions on what she could do in the Captain Marvel sequels, leading her to reveal that they shot down her original pitch involving Adam Warlock and time travel due to Guardians of the Galaxy and Loki.
“Actually, interestingly, one of the first things I pitched with way back when was having Adam Warlock and time travel in the movie,” DaCosta explained. “But Adam was going to be in ‘Guardians 3,’ and I think they have enough time travel on ‘Loki,’ so we didn’t do that, but we have some fun stuff in that realm in the movie anyway.”
“So, my big plan, which is part of what’s amazing about doing something in such a big universe, so many films, was like, ‘Well, if we introduce Adam Warlock here, we bring him into the present and then in another movie we understand where he was coming from sort of thing,’ so it was into our contemporary for the movie.”
It seems as though Nia DaCosta was hoping to tee up Adam Warlock to be used in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with The Marvels, though those plans obviously didn’t come to pass. The rejected pitch certainly would have been an interesting one, holding strong connections to nearly every corner of the MCU. However, the final project certainly shows DaCosta’s love for the shared universe, even if critics aren’t in love with her contribution to it!
The talent behind The Marvels
The Marvels is a groundbreaking film in many ways. Not only does it feature three powerful female superheroes, but it also has a female director, Nia DaCosta, who previously directed the horror flick Candyman. The movie features a cast that includes Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur.
“She has a really calm vibe, too,” Iman Vellani said about DaCosta. “These movies are not easy to make at all. There’s like a million, bajillion little moving pieces. She and [executive producer] Mary [Livanos] did such a great job to keep morale high. Even if there were days where they wanted to rip people’s heads off, they would never show it and never put their stress on anyone else.”
In addition to directing The Marvels, Nia DaCosta also co-wrote the script alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells. During an interview, DaCosta described the movie as being “full comic book madness,” teasing what audiences can expect from the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
