He was sent to FCI Tuscon after being transferred from a maximum-security Minnesota state prison in August 2022 to continue serving a 21-year sentence for violating George Floyd’s civil rights and a 22-year sentence for second-degree murder. The disgraced cop’s lawyer, Eric Nelson, has requested for his client to be out of the general population and away from other inmates, believing he would be targeted. Chauvin was in solitary confinement for his own protection.
Derek Chauvin (born March 18, 1976) is an American former police officer who was convicted of the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck and back for nine minutes and 29 seconds, even after Floyd became unresponsive. Floyd’s death sparked protests against police brutality and racial injustice around the world.
Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter on April 20, 2021. He was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for second-degree murder, 10 years in prison for third-degree murder, and 4 years in prison for second-degree manslaughter, all to be served concurrently. He was also ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution to Floyd’s family.
