Summary

Tokyo Vice season 2 will resolve the cliffhangers from season 1, providing answers to the fate of the characters. New images reveal two important new characters: Shoko Nagata, an investigator, and Naoki Hayama, another underworld figure. The creator promises that all the unresolved storylines from season 1 will be settled throughout season 2, some immediately and some later on.

Tokyo Vice season 2 images reveal new characters, as the creator promises season 1’s cliffhangers will be resolved. Jake Adelstein’s 2009 book served as the inspiration for season 1 of Max’s gritty crime drama, following the exploits of a young reporter from America (Ansel Elgort) covering the police beat in Japan’s largest metropolis. The goings-on in that first season came to a dramatic end in a final episode that left the fates of many characters very much up in the air, leaving viewers wondering if they’d ever get resolution to the show’s various cliffhangers.

That Tokyo Vice season 1 ending may have left a lot of questions, but those questions will get answers, the show’s creator promises, as new season 2 images drop (via EW).

Included in the image release is a look at two important new characters: Miki Maya’s Shoko Nagata, an investigator who wants to take a more aggressive stance against the yakuza, and Yosuke Kubozuka’s Naoki Hayama, another member of the show’s gallery of underworld figures. Check out creator J.T. Rogers’ remarks about resolving the first season’s storylines below:

“We had Max’s blessing to end season 1 with an episode that was nothing but cliffhangers. I was writing season 2 while we were shooting season 1, so it is the same story that we’re following. Everything that was left hanging at the end of season 1 will be settled — if not immediately, then over the course of the season. Some right away, some later on.”

Every Cliffhanger Tokyo Vice Season 2 Needs To Resolve

Much of Tokyo Vice season 1 revolved around Samantha (Rachel Keller) and her efforts to discover the fate of her missing friend Polina (Ella Rumpf). In the season 1 finale, Samantha’s attempt to pay off Polina’s abductors ended with her being betrayed by Polina’s boyfriend Akira (Tomohisa Yamashita), leaving her destitute, and forced to accept a loan from yakuza moneylenders. Meanwhile, Jake (Elgort) was left with a videotape providing a clue to where Polina might be, and took the tape to Katagiri (Ken Watanabe). But Katagiri had his own problems, after sending his family away to protect them from Tozawa following the yakuza leader’s threats against both him and Jake. Sato (Show Kasamatsu), though, was left in the most dire straits of all after being stabbed by meth-addict writer Haruki (Motoki Kobayashi).

Tokyo Vice finished filming before the strikes hit, allowing it to remain on-schedule.

Very little has been revealed about what happens in Tokyo Vice season 2, but the show is sure to pick up the plot threads left by season 1, rather than veer off into a completely new story. When the new season picks up, Jake, Samantha and Katagiri are all in danger from the yakuza, while Polina’s fate is even more uncertain. Answers will come when Tokyo Vice returns to Max in February 2024.
