LA eccentric Izzy Spears makes dizzying, fearless music that transcends borders, and today he returns with a new single called “Serena.” The track comes with a music video that’s equally sinister and absorbing, and AP is giving you the first look.
Throughout the video, Spears is in pursuit of a better life. He follows Serena, “the embodiment of Miss American Dream herself,” clawing toward her through the mud in what feels like a twisted hallucination. Yet she’s always out of reach, sneering at him with an intensity that makes his quest seem dubious. Delirious moments of highs and withdrawal make the visual eerie, and real, as hell — until Spears finally reaches Serena and becomes consumed.

“It’s not about slaying the beast, but how the monster impacts the character,” Spears tells AP, who does everything with intent and isn’t afraid to bet big. His music shares DNA with George Clinton, André 3000, and Yves Tumor, who he opened for on their U.S. tour this past spring, but in attitude more than sound. You can see for yourself when his second EP, M*A*D, arrives on Dec. 15.
