Yaas! Superstar athlete Sha’Carri Richardson was just honored at the 2023 USATF Awards and she continues to remain a speedy and motivational force to be reckoned with. To people telling her, “It’s been a long time coming” for her to receive her flowers, she tells them, “[With] the God that I serve, everything happens when it’s supposed to happen.”

Among other talented athletes, like Noah Lyles, Sha’Carri Richardson took home a major award on Saturday (December 2). The 23-year-old, whose redemption arc came full circle in 2023, was she’s now been awarded the “Jackie Joyner-Kersee Athlete of the Year” trophy for women after winning the 100m, securing bronze in the 200m (in a lifetime best of 21.92s), and anchoring the Team USA women’s 4x100m relay team to gold at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

While receiving her award, Richardson took to the stage and offered a more than inspirational acceptance speech. A clip posted to the USATF Instagram account shows the superstar runner revealing how despite any of her shortcomings or perceived delays in receiving her flowers, things always happen when they are meant to. Richardson said, “A lot [of people were] commentating, ‘Oh, it’s a long time coming.’ No. The God that I serve… everything happens when it’s supposed to happen.”

Richardson continued, “And I stand here today as your world champion, that’s because now was the time for it to happen. Now was the most impactful it would be, the most powerful it would be, and the most sincere it would be.”

The superstar runner added, “So as I stand here today, I understand the influence that I have. I understand the responsibility that I have to USATF as a top female USA athlete, and to my country, and to my Black family, to my beautiful women, to everybody that has been misunderstood for trying to be their best selves and not be put into a category — because in track and field, they put you into a bubble for success. And I feel like I’ve shown that as long as you are yourself, you work hard, you can display whatever it is that is you, and still get the job done.”
