The multiverse is everywhere and Invincible seems to be no exception. The series’ creator Robert Kirkman teases a more character-driven multiverse story with Angstrom Levy in season 2.

Invincible is dipping its toes into the current multiverse craze with Mark Grayson matching up against Angstrom Levy in the show’s second season. Though according to the series’ creator Robert Kirkman, the show was never designed to ride the wave of the multiverse craze, making it entirely a coincidence that they’ll be tackling a multiverse story, despite loving the concept:

“It’s funny because I don’t think I knew about Far From Home or Spider-Verse – or maybe Spider-Verse was out – but when we decided to do this for Season 2, I didn’t know that there was a Flash movie,” Kirkman told Collider. “It’s literally everywhere. I don’t know what it is about it. I think it’s a great tool to use to bring different incarnations of things in, which I think is kind of becoming… I’m gonna say easy button. It’s like, ‘let’s make this cool, bring that guy from that other thing in here.’ And so it’s super cool and as a fan, I love it.”

Robert Kirkman’s love for the multiverse stems back long before the current craze. Angstrom Levy and his multiversal powers were first introduced way back in the Invincible comics in 2004, with the character’s motivations largely focusing on the hate he has for Mark Grayson, whom he blames for the accident that disfigured him and gave him his powers. According to Kirkman, its that motivation that separates this story from the other multiverse stories:

“But I will say that we’re using Angstrom Levy’s Multiverse capabilities in a much different way. It’s not just about pulling different things that you may love into a story through the Multiverse,” Kirkman continued “It’s a very character-driven story. There’s a lot of drama to it seeing the Sliding Doors aspect of another dimension, and finding out, like, how things went a different way when different decisions were made. We’re kind of drilling it down to its simplest form, and it’s not this massive… I’m trying not to say the word unwieldy, thing.”

Often times fans and studios alike overcomplicate the multiverse, claiming it needs to be pushed to its most extreme like in films such as Everything Everywhere All At Once. However it seems as though Robert Kirkman views the multiverse in Invincible like any other character building tool in storytelling, focusing more on Angstrom Levy and how characters can grow from the concept. With this mentality behind the show’s second season, it seems as though the multiverse is in good hands!

The cast and storyline of the Invincible adaptation

The cast of Invincible also includes J.K. Simmons, Sandrah Oh, Mark Hamill, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Mae Whitman and Malese Jow.

An official synopsis for the eight-episode first season of the Amazon Prime Video series reads as follows: “INVINCIBLE is an adult animated superhero series that revolves around 17-year-old Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who’s just like every other guy his age — except his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). But as Mark develops powers of his own, he discovers his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems.”

Invincible season one is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the series and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
