A Georgia high school baseball player, who was left in a coma last month after accidentally getting hit with a bat during practice, has now been pronounced dead. Jeremy Medina, a senior at Gainesville High School, died on Monday (December 11). He was 18.

Following his death, on Tuesday (December 12), the Medina family released a statement that read, “We began the process of seeking a visa for his grandmother so she could travel to be with us for the honor walk. Sadly, his heart stopped last night about an hour before grandma arrived. We know Jeremy was and will always be in God’s hands and we will see him soon.”

Before the tragic death of Medina, who was a pitcher and catcher for his high school baseball team, he was accidentally struck in the head by a baseball bat while inside the batting cages on the school’s campus on November 20.

The Gainesville High School principal Jamie Green also told WSB-TV that Medina had leaned into the net of the batting cage while a teammate followed through a swing. Green assured that there was “no horseplay, no misconduct, and no intent,” it was simply an accident.

In a statement released on November 22, the Gainesville City School System wrote, “On behalf of the family we release the name of the student injured Monday, November 20 at 1:20 p.m. at Gainesville High School. Jeremy Media, a senior at Gainesville High School and a pitcher and catcher for the 2022 baseball team, was accidentally struck in the head by a baseball bat while at the batting cage on campus.”

The statement continued, “Medina remains in a coma at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Jeremy and his family are firm believers in Jesus Christ and His redemptive love, and are requesting prayer during this extremely difficult time.”

Following the accident with Medina, the baseball player was placed into a coma, but last week, doctors announced at a press conference that they had declared him brain dead as of Wednesday (December 6). At the time, the family of the Georgia high school baseball player said they would fulfill his wish to become an organ donor. They said, “We are grateful for all the prayers and support over the last three weeks, and we appreciate everyone’s understanding as we take time now to be with our family.”

Speaking with Univision 34 Atlanta, the teen’s father David Medina said, “I was able to go and hug that boy and tell him that we understand that he didn’t have the bad intention to hurt my son, but that it was an accident.”
