Republican Presidential candidate Nikki Haley is doing a bit of backtracking after getting dragged online the other day for NOT acknowledging that the Civil War was “about slavery.” Following her initial comments, she was checked by sitting President Joe Biden, former CNN host Don Lemon, and pretty much the rest of the world. Now, she’s had a change of mind.
On Wednesday evening (December 27), Nikki Haley failed to mention that slavery was a catalyst for the Civil War during a town hall meeting in Berlin, New Hampshire. A voter had asked her, “What was the cause of the United States Civil War?”

Haley answered, “Well don’t come with an easy question or anything. I mean, I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how the government was going to run. The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do.” The presidential hopeful then redirected the question back to the voter, who clapped back and said he wasn’t the one running for president and wanted to hear her answer.
Haley then continued to say that Americans need economic freedom and other liberties without the government interfering. The voter replied, “Thank you. In the year 2023, it’s astonishing to me that you’d answer that question without mentioning the word slavery.” Haley answered, “What do you want me to say about slavery?” The voter said, “You’ve answered my question. Thank you.”

In response to the incident, the entire internet went and dragged Nikki Haley, including President Joe Biden, who quickly seized the moment to check another presidential candidate. Hopping on X (formerly Twitter), Biden retweeted a video clip of the incident and simply wrote, “It was about slavery.”
Joining in on the fun with Joe Biden, Haley’s fellow Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy replied to the same video clip and said, “I think she mistook him for a Super PAC donor.” Also, Ron DeSantis, Florida governor and another fellow GOP presidential contender, chimed in and reportedly told reporters in Iowa, “I noticed that Nikki Haley has had some problems with some basic American history. She’s asked a very simple question and responded with just a really incomprehensible word salad…. not a candidate that’s ready for primetime.”

Additionally, former CNN host Don Lemon took the time to check Nikki Haley as well. He tweeted, “Nikki Haley wants grace for using a poor choice of words when, after I misspoke in some comments involving her, she didn’t offer me that same grace, immediately and very publicly took me to task, and then fundraised off of it. However, I’m glad she clarified what she should have said. And, In the spirit of the season, let’s see if her actions match her corrected words moving forward.”
Following all of the backlash, Nikki Haley has since backtracked and told CNN she didn’t mention slavery because she thought it was too obvious. She said, “Of course, the Civil War was about slavery. We know that. That’s the easy part of it. What I was saying was, what does it mean to us today? What it means to us today is about freedom. That’s what that was all about. It was about individual freedom. It was about economic freedom. It was about individual rights. Our goal is to make sure we never go back to the stain of slavery. But what’s the lesson in all of that?”
