Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, Reinier Zonneveld is spurring a revolutionary new approach to live music performance.
The techno superstar is set to debut his own proprietary music software, R². By training an AI model on over 2,000 hours of his music, Zonneveld’s innovation seeks to make impromptu live compositions a possibility in the electronic music space.
Zonneveld’s team tells us the cutting-edge feat has led to an AI model capable of composing tracks live, effectively enabling collaborative performances alongside the artist himself. Having studied his craft and performances—one of which recently broke a Guinness World Record—the AI is capable of delivering loops, samples and more in a way that mirrors Zonneveld’s own performance style.

Tomorrowland
“4 years ago I started exploring the use of AI in my music,” Zonneveld said. “Fast forward 2024, I developed an AI clone of my own musical brain with the help of a dear friend. It is able to play together with me and create music on the spot, suddenly opening up a whole new world of possibilities in my performance.”
The technology certainly challenges the conventions of live music, intertwining the spontaneity of human performance with the precision and adaptability of artificial intelligence. Zonneveld’s R² also potentially represents a case study of AI’s ability to augment the human-led creative process in lieu of displacing it.
The R² software’s premiere is scheduled to take place on August 17th in the Dutch village of Spaarnwoude.
