While not a ton is known about the story of the upcoming Superman: Legacy, director and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn did reveal that worries about public domain won’t have any impact on it.

Taking to the Instagram-based social media platform Threads, Gunn confirmed that reports of The Authority being featured in Superman: Legacy due to concerns of Superman entering the public domain are not true. Gunn flat out denied the news, and said “no story decisions were based on characters becoming public domain.”

Two of DC’s biggest heroes, Batman and Superman, are set to enter the public domain in 2035 and 2034, respectively. They will soon be joined by other characters like Joker and Wonder Woman, and will join a growing pool of popular characters that joined the public domain recently, including Mickey Mouse’s Steamboat Willie design.

Who will be in Superman: Legacy?

The titular role in Superman: Legacy is being played by David Corenswet (Pearl, The Politician), while Lois Lane will be played by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan. They’re joined by Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, María Gabriela De Faría, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, and more. The film is set to release on July 11, 2025.

The DC Universe’s first phase, called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, will feature a multitude of different movies and television shows. A few of the announced projects include a Batman and Robin-focused movie called The Brave and the Bold, a Supergirl movie titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing film, and multiple TV shows.
