It seems as though Nia DaCosta is already shooting for a sequel to The Marvels prior to the film’s release this November. However, Marvel Studios may have other plans for Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan.
Following the release of Captain Marvel, Nia DaCosta took over from directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck for the planned sequel in The Marvels, which adds Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) to its roster of heroes. While the film doesn’t open for a few more months, DaCosta is ready to team back up with Brie Larson for a sequel. However, she suspects that Marvel Studios may have bigger plans for the characters:
“I’ll pitch Kevin [Feige] 17 versions of what can happen with all these women, and why and how, and this and that,” DaCosta told Total Film. “And he’s like, ‘Okay, girl’, and sometimes I think I’ve really got a movie going after this. And then other times, I’m like, ‘Oh, they have this whole other plan that I’m not a part of.’”
It’s not a surprise that Marvel Studios would want to hold back greenlighting a sequel before The Marvels releases, especially given the current scrutiny of superhero films by fans. It’s also possible they break apart Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau for their own solo projects given their popularity. Though given Nia DaCosta’s passion for the characters, one can only hope she has a future with them.
The talent behind The Marvels
The Marvels is set to be a groundbreaking film in many ways. Not only does it feature three powerful female superheroes, but it also has a female director, Nia DaCosta, who previously directed the horror flick Candyman. The movie features a cast that includes Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur.
“She has a really calm vibe, too,” Iman Vellani said about DaCosta. “These movies are not easy to make at all. There’s like a million, bajillion little moving pieces. She and [executive producer] Mary [Livanos] did such a great job to keep morale high. Even if there were days where they wanted to rip people’s heads off, they would never show it and never put their stress on anyone else.”
In addition to directing The Marvels, Nia DaCosta also co-wrote the script alongside Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells. During an interview, DaCosta described the movie as being “full comic book madness,” teasing what audiences can expect from the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
