Actor/writer/director/producer Donald Glover is fighting back against misogynoir accusations, which are claiming he strongly dislikes Black women.

Glover, whose musical moniker is Childish Gambino, has continuously faced rumors alleging he has a disdain for Black women since evolving from standup comedian to rap superstar and to his latest career move as a TV/Film visionary.

It’s been reported that as recently as last year, when Glover released his co-created and executive-produced dark crime dramedy Swarm, he faced several allegations of disliking Black women, despite the project starring and being led by two Black women: Dominique Fishback and Chloe Bailey. When the Amazon Prime series dropped, several critics online claimed it wasn’t enough to “beat the allegations.”

Things only became worse when a portion of a March 2023 Vulture article with Fishback promoting the series went viral for all of the wrong reasons. In her interview, Fishback revealed that Glover insisted that her character, a Black woman with a mysterious dark past and dangerous idolization of a Beyoncé-inspired pop star, didn’t require a full backstory, much less need to be humanized as she committed her brutal acts.

Since Fishback’s viral interview and continued misogynoir allegations, Donald Glover is now promoting his new Amazon Prime project, ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith.’ While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter alongside his co-star Maya Erskine, Glover spoke about his relationship with Black women, which his co-star and the interviewer were curious to learn came about.

Glover was asked about his now-infamous 2022 Interview magazine feature where he interviewed himself and even asked if he feared Black women. After posing the question, he sort of refused to answer it and then explained that he only asked it because others had been too afraid to pose the question directly.

Speaking with THR, Glover said, “I felt like it was something that people always say, but no one ever asked because I felt like people really don’t want to know. It is a better narrative. But anybody who actually knows me knows how much that hurts me.”

He continued to insist that despite how he feels, the truth doesn’t even matter because the internet will still believe what they want to believe. He explained, “But I also realize it doesn’t matter. People are not going to read this and be like, ‘Wow, I was wrong.’”

Glover’s co-star then asked, “It hurts you, but what’s your process after, to be like, ‘But, I don’t care?’” Glover responded, “To go play with my kids and be happy and be present. Because my kids know that and they’re the only ones who matter. Or my mom knows that, and she’s the only one who matters. Or Quinta [Brunson] knows that, and she’s the only one who matters. People who actually know me. And also, it’s not true. When I walk down the street in Atlanta, that’s not what happens.”

He continued to explain that all of the allegations and people not wanting to believe their truths are just a part of being famous. He added, “That’s what celebrity is.”
