As we previously reported, a network disruption is affecting AT&T customers in the U.S. and federal agencies have launched an investigation into the massive outage. The disruption, which occurred on Thursday morning, has raised concerns about whether it was the result of a cyber attack.

AT&T customers woke up to wireless service interruptions, prompting the company to issue a statement advising customers to utilize Wi-Fi calling until service is fully restored. The company acknowledged the issue and assured customers that they were working diligently to resolve it.

As the morning progressed, AT&T provided an update stating that 75% of its network had been restored. Despite the progress, the remaining customers were still experiencing service interruptions, highlighting the urgency of the situation. “Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning. We are working urgently to restore service to them. We encourage the use of Wi-Fi calling until service is restored,” an AT&T spokesperson said in a statement to ABC News.

Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the FBI, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and other agencies are actively investigating the outage to determine its cause. The possibility of a cyber attack or hack is being considered, along with the potential for a technical malfunction.

The impact of the outage was widespread, with over 73,000 AT&T customers reporting issues on DownDetector, a digital-service tracking site. Local governments, such as San Francisco’s Department of Emergency Management, also felt the effects as the outage disrupted essential services, including access to emergency lines.

AT&T, a telecommunications giant serving over 100 million customers, plays a critical role in providing mobile and broadband services nationwide. AT&T has since issued a new update saying 75% of its network had been restored.

“Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning. Our network teams took immediate action and so far three-quarters of our network has been restored. We are working as quickly as possible to restore service to remaining customers,” the company said.

As the investigation unfolds, customers and authorities are eager to uncover the cause of the outage and ensure that necessary steps are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
