Raj Kumar, a painter who tragically lost both arms in a bike accident, has received a new lease on life through a pioneering double arm transplant. This surgical milestone took place on January 19 at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, India, lasting an intensive 12 hours.

According to Hindustan Times, Kumar’s life changed dramatically following a harrowing incident where he was involved in a train accident while cycling, resulting in the loss of both his arms. Before the transplant, he had adapted to life with prosthetic arms, navigating the challenges posed by his condition with resilience. The transplant operation saw Kumar receiving female arms, a donation from Meena Mehta, a respected headteacher from South Delhi, who was declared brain dead before the donation. “When we were looking for potential candidates for hand transplant, Kumar was on our waiting list. As per transplant protocols, detailed examination and necessary investigations were done. In third week of January, a glimmer of optimism emerged for Raj Kumar when he got a call from the hospital,” said Dr Mahesh Mangal, chairman of the Department of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery.
